Abstract

The datafication of pastoral care confronts the Church with the very danger named by Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas: reducing the person “to data and performance.” This article demonstrates that the danger is not inevitable, and charts the way beyond it. Grounded in the Archdiocese of Semarang (KAS, Indonesia) and its pastoral information ecosystem, Ecclesia, a real-time parishioner database of over 360,000 members and, with digitized sacramental registers, over 1.7 million records, we, as developer-participants, conduct analytic autoethnography within Clodovis Boff’s three mediations on primary institutional documents. The analysis traces three dimensions, visibility, telos, and agency, and tests them against Catholic social teaching: imago Dei, subsidiarity, and communion. Following Bernard Lonergan’s cognitional structure, the article establishes that meaning, truth, and value, the work of pastoral discernment, cannot be delegated to computation. Its central contribution is a model of pastoral datafication: when the movement of data halts at the metric, the loop closes toward Babel; when data is re-encoded to return to the person, it becomes an open spiral widening toward the person’s fullness as imago Dei and pilgrim toward God, irreducible to any algorithm. It closes with design and governance principles that support pastoral discernment.
