Abstract

This study aimed to analyze changes in students’ ability to identify basic counseling skills after participating in video-based learning in a microcounseling practicum. A quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest design was employed. The participants were 44 undergraduate Guidance and Counseling students. Identification ability was assessed through a video-based test covering ten basic counseling skills: Acceptance, Restatement, Reflection of Feeling, Clarification, Paraphrasing, Structuring, Rejection, Reassurance, Summary, and Confrontation. Data were analyzed descriptively at the total-score and individual-skill levels and inferentially using a paired-samples t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed an increase in the mean score from 2.68 at pretest to 5.05 at posttest, with a gain of 2.36 points. The difference between pretest and posttest scores was statistically significant based on the paired-samples t-test (t(43) = −6.23; p < 0.001) and Wilcoxon signed-rank test (W = 80.00; p < 0.001). Item-level analysis revealed different patterns of change across the microskills. The largest improvements were observed in Confrontation, Rejection, Structuring, and Restatement, whereas Acceptance showed a different pattern. An examination of students’ responses indicated that some students identified Acceptance as attending or empathy in the posttest. These findings suggest that video-based learning can support students’ ability to recognize basic counseling skills; however, increased recognition should not be interpreted as evidence of mastery at the performance level. Video is more appropriately positioned as a complementary resource to lecturer modeling and other practicum activities involving practice, feedback, and reflection.
